The year 2021 has been very difficult indeed in the life of our people: the social and political crisis that tore the country for too long has reached its highest peak.
Never before have we seen in the streets of Port-au-Prince such a reign of terror where violence, bloodshed, and impunity seem to become the norm. Never before have we seen people from all social strata taken captive into the spiral of violence.
Even the president with all his entourage has not been spared its snare. He has been brutally assassinated in his private chambers in the middle of the night on July 7, 2021. Since then, fear seems to dominate every sphere of the people social life. On the faces of many you can read fear, desperation, and uncertainty.
Consequently our young people are desperate and they are ready to leave the country at the first opportunity. Those who finally have escaped this horror after a long and difficult journey to reach the border of Eldorado, then all of a sudden, they saw their American dream miserably fade away.
To this very complicated situation to say the least, added the devastating 7.2 earthquake of August 14, 2021, a terrible disaster that leaves destruction and death throughout the three geographical areas of the country: namely Nippes, South, and Grand-Anse. The casualties are enormous; the death toll is high indeed, and the suffering beyond description. More than 2200 people were reported dead, hundreds are still missing, 5700 people are still missing, 5700 people on severely wounded, and innumerable others are displaced to other regions…
